Brian Hecker, Writer/Director Bart Got a Room
Iratefilms.com was lucky to discuss Bart Got a Room with burgeoning writer/director, Brain Hecker. Hecker seemed very happy to see his movie made, after 12 years of tireless devotion. Hecker led a dynamic group of actors, filmmakers and writers through 12 pain-staking years to realize his untainted dream.  Â
“This was not an easy task,” Hecker led off the conversation. He told us about the journey of having a short film land him Director of the Year from the Film Institute, where he obtained his education. From there, Hecker knew there was hope of turning his short film into a full-length feature film; and the journey began.Â
Since Brian is from South Florida, where he dreamed of making his first film, “After all, you write what you know,” stated Hecker. From there, Hecker started out to accomplish his goal by beginning a script; he was able to knock out the first draft within a month. And the journey finally began, Hecker found Plum Pictures out of New York to on his project. Many months later, the project found its first attachment, Danny DeVito. Yes, the man we all love from Taxi and countless film projects. DeVito loved the script so much that he took several meetings at his house with Hecker discussing the project. However, a single black cloud found its way to rain on Hecker’s parade in the double-edged devotion of DeVito. According to Hecker, DeVito wanted his daughter in the film and the film was to be shot in L.A.—Hecker’s biggest nightmare. From the onset, Hecker wanted to keep the essence of what this film was all about—following the pangs of a boy growing up South Florida and the difficulties he was having with the dating scene. Hecker knew what he had to do. Â
He decided to stick to his guns and cut himself loose of Danny DeVito.  Now, without any solid talent committed to his labor of love, what was Hecker to do? Look for someone else. Hecker pounded the pavement looking for individuals and came across William H. Macy. It was down to the wire before the window of opportunity closed because during all these years the script was sold and it would take $300,000 to buy it back. Now with Macy attached, it was worth every last penny. Plum Pictures purchased the script back and Hecker was now making a movie!Â
Bart Got a Room opens across the U.S. today in 11 theaters. We wish Brian Hecker all the luck with his film.   Â
