From young French director, Kim Chapiron (who made 2006 film, SHEITAN), this drama is a chilling walk through a training ground for violence and aggression, able to stand up on its own bare-boned terms to comparisons with Jacques Audiard’s A PROPHET, DOG POUND follows three young offenders with a camera that couldn’t be closer to the skin. Cinematographer Andre Chemetoff sustains that tactility throughout the film, so the cramped spaces are felt as much as seen.

Rick Swift says, I typically enjoy French dramas, and this one looks like a cross between FMJ, Bad Boys, and Sleepers. Raw, Intense – Youth Gone Wild! Dog Pound reflects society’s lack of interest in youth aggression, and the general fear or apathy of damaged teens. Kid is a trouble-maker? Send him to the pound! I wonder if the euthanasia metaphor will be explored – I guess you’ll have to see it to find out.

Trailer: Clash of the Titans

Tuesday, January 19th, 2010

Swift thought:  A French director, trained at NYU, worldly view should have a dynamic impact on the classic original from 1981.  I don’t mind that they are re-imagining Clash of the Titans, as long as they do right by her.  Based on what I have seen so far, I am expecting a lot!

Trailer: Greenberg

Tuesday, December 1st, 2009

Swift thought: Looks like a typical Noah Baumbach offering.  The preview hints at comedy, but methinks it will fall flat in that department.  Still, if The Squid and the Whale is your cup of tea, I doubt you could go wrong with this Ben Stiller release, scheduled to hit the cans in a limited release March 12, 2010.

Trailer: Brothers

Wednesday, November 11th, 2009

Swift thought:  I think this is one of those films that is going to royally piss me off!  I am tired of seeing Gyllenhaal put down jarheads in his latest films; the trailer makes me think it will be more of the military bashing crap Hollywood creams over – while the brave and few offer them the luxury to keep making flanking assaults on our veterans and polishing it up as a “tribute”.  I wish Pat Dollard would make a film that received such a stellar cast (Padme and Spiderman no less) and production team!

Brothers

Based on the Danish motion picture ‘BRODRE” by Susan Bier and Anders Thomas Jensen.

Very Detailed Synopsis (Read at Your Own Risk): When a decorated Marine goes missing overseas, his black-sheep younger brother cares for his wife and children at home—with consequences that will shake the foundation of the entire family.

BROTHERS tells the powerful story of two siblings, thirty-something Captain Sam Cahill (Tobey Maguire) and younger brother Tommy Cahill (Jake Gyllenhaal), who are polar opposites.  A Marine about to embark on his fourth tour of duty, Sam is a steadfast family man married to his high school sweetheart, the aptly named Grace (Natalie Portman), with whom he has two young daughters (Bailee Madison, Taylor Grace Geare).  Tommy, his charismatic younger brother, is a drifter just out of jail who’s always gotten by on wit and charm.  He slides easily into his role as family provocateur on his first night out of prison, at Sam’s farewell dinner with their parents, Elsie (Mare Winningham) and Hank Cahill (Sam Shepard), a retired Marine.

Shipped out to Afghanistan, Sam is presumed dead when his Black Hawk helicopter is shot down in the mountains.  At home in suburbia, the Cahill family suddenly faces a shocking void, and Tommy tries to fill in for his brother by assuming newfound responsibility for himself, Grace, and the children.

But Sam is not dead; he and a fellow soldier have been captured by Taliban fighters.  In Afghanistan’s harsh, remote Pamir Mountains, Sam is subjected to traumas that threaten to rob him of his very humanity.  At the same time that Sam’s sense of self is being destroyed overseas, Tommy’s self-image is strengthening at home.  And in the grief and strangeness of their new lives, Grace and Tommy are naturally drawn together.  Their longstanding frostiness dissolves, but both are frightened and ashamed of the mutual attraction that has replaced it.

When Sam unexpectedly returns to the States, a nervous mood settles over the family.  Sam, uncharacteristically withdrawn and volatile, grows suspicious of his brother and his wife.  Their familiar roles now nearly reversed, Sam and Tommy end up facing the ultimate physical and mental challenge when they confront each other. In the shifting family dynamics, who will dominate? And how will the brothers come to terms with issues of love, loyalty, and manhood—and with the woman caught between them?

Trailer: How to Train Your Dragon

Wednesday, November 11th, 2009

Swift thought: Feeling nostalgic for my old Norsk stomping grounds and found this little gem coming soon from DreamWorks:

Cast: Jay Baruchel, Gerard Butler, America Ferrera, Craig Ferguson, Jonah Hill, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Kristen Wiig, TJ Miller

Synopsis: From the studio that brought you “Shrek,” “Madagascar” and “Kung Fu Panda” comes “How to Train Your Dragon.” Set in the mythical world of burly Vikings and wild dragons, and based on the book by Cressida Cowell, the action comedy tells the story of Hiccup, a Viking teenager who doesn’t exactly fit in with his tribe’s longstanding tradition of heroic dragon slayers.  Hiccup’s world is turned upside down when he encounters a dragon that challenges he and his fellow Vikings to see the world from an entirely different point of view.

Paranormal Activity

Rick Swift says, “Looks interesting.  It has a kind of Blair Witch feel to it, thing with that film is, if you have a limited imagination it wasn’t great.  It either terrified you or it was just annoying, this looks like it will probably be the same way.  Still, I personally LOVE supernatural stories setup to be authentic.  With all the Ghost Hunter fans and Paranormal State fans, I am sure A&E and SciFi – or is it SyFy (ugh) fans will eat it up.”
