Twilight: Eclipse

***½

Limacher Low Down: I went into this movie thinking the worst, and really not even ready to give it a chance; I was wrong about it, and I can OPENLY admit it. The movie does a great job of keeping those people who loved the books and the movies satisfied and thirsting for more. The fact that people enjoy the people who are in the movies is still BEYOND me, but the plot lines and action kept me intrigued and kept my attention for the whole movie.

Eclipse is the next chapter in the Twilight Saga following Bella (Kristen Stewart) and Edward (Robert Pattinson) and their love which is outside the norm (especially for high schoolers).

A young man, Riley Biers (Xavier Samuel) has disappeared and Bella’s father, Charlie Swain (Billy Burke) has been searching for him for a solid year.  Swain is not thrilled with his only daughter, Bella, dating Edward Cullen, and is uneasy with how enamored she is with him.  He would much rather she take up with Jacob Black (Taylor Lautner), but when attempts to call Jacob, he never answers.  Bella is torn between her love for Edward, the vampire and Jacob who is a werewolf. If you know anything about leeches and lycanthropes, you know they don’t play well together, nor share for that matter.

A typical teen angst love triangle ensues between Jacob, Bella and Edward as there is a confrontation between the three at school.  But, in the Twilight universe, it is never that simple.  As Jacob and Bella take a cruise on his metallic steed, Jacob informs Bella there are some nefarious forces at work to see her killed.  Furthermore, her Mr. Sparkles knows all about it, but is keeping it from her.

An army is being created, a new born wave of fresh blood-suckers is being recruited. Who is behind the army?  The Volturi, the missing Riley or other forces yet divulged?  Jane Volturi (Dakota Fanning) brings more political intrigue which was touched on in New Moon; a war is coming, and the prize is Bella’s blood. Armies are being raised, and Jasper Hale (Jackson Rathbone) trains the local vampires how to defeat the army being raised.  He’s an adept trainer, as we learn his past in a nice flashback montage.

I really enjoyed the training scenes, as the special effects department got to bare their teeth a bit.  Soon after hearing the story of how Jasper got turned, Bella has a dream and realizes who it is that is wanting her blood. A plan is made on how to lure the Newborn Army and how to protect Bella at the same time. Protecting Bella means taking her away far away from the battle grounds, but she and her stalwart protectors face a frigid snow storm in the mountains.  In the tent she’s freezing. This is the point were the line of the movie was uttered by Jacob to Edward when wanting to keep Bella warm.  Go see it if you want to know the line, I am guessing most teenage girls and such will LOVE this bit, and I gave it a chuckle myself.

Surprising to me, whilst keeping Bella warm, Jacob and Edward actually BOND in a way (no, not a Brokeback way), which was a nice surprise for me – a guy who didn’t really give a shit but started getting into the plot.

Finally, the battle is joined – between the Newborn Vamps vs. the Were’s and Vamps . . . and it’s about fucking time. The battle is well done and the fight scenes are something that those who get dragged kicking and screaming, or just to make their girlfriends happy, will enjoy. The battle wasn’t as long as it could’ve been, but for what it was, it boosted it a star or so.  This chapter of the Twilight Saga ends with a view to the final chapter – and now everyone has to wait for the FINAL Chapter, er Chapters of the Twilight Saga since Breaking Dawn will be two parts.
